Byzantium or Democracy? Kondakov's Legacy in Emigration: the Institutum Kondakovianum and André Grabar, 1925–1952. Ivan Foletti, Adrien Palladino.

In the nineteenth-century, Russian scholars working under Tsarist regimes were, either explicitly or tacitly, condoning and even supporting the ruling autocracy. After the Revolution of 1917, however, many of Founded by Russian emigres fleeing from the Bolshevik Revolution, Seminarium Kondakovianum faced the Communist regime’s strong opposition during its years of publication. This article recounts the stages of this troubled story - from the journal’s foundation with the support of the Ruska Akce (a policy developed in Czechoslovakia in 1920s to welcome middle-class Russian refugees), through Constructing the Past through the Present. Even following this statement, Seminarium Kondakovianum – founded in honor of Kondakov, and printed in Prague between 1927 and 1938 (plus a 1940 issue realized in Belgrade) – published during the 1920s and the 1930s just five articles concerning Byzantine illumination, a scarce number considering the importance Kondakov gave to their study.

Kondakova (Археологический институт Convivium se hlásí k dědictví časopisu Seminarium Kondakovianum, který od roku 1927 vydával v Praze stejnojmenný ústav, Seminarium Kondakovium, založený k poctě Nikodima P. Kondakova.
